Corvus Yellowstonensis

Dimensions: 36" x 36" x 1"
Date: 2008
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felted Wool, Stone, Crow's Feet

In 2007 I took photographs of Corvids and geothermal pools at Yellowstone. This piece is based on my observations of birds and the organism-colored pools of water.
Corvus Antiquus #1

Dimensions: 33" x 33" x 2"
Date: 2006
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt, Embroidery Thread

During my research in Columbia Basin “rock art”, I never saw an image of a crow, so I decided to create a piece as if I had seen one.
Corvus Seattlensis #2

Dimensions: 27" x 27" x 1"
Date: 2001
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt, Crow Feet, Embroidery Thread, Piping, Pewter Charm

The body of this Corvus is made up of many swirls of beads, all the same type of black bead. The swirls have subtle variations in the black tones, and are matched by the pink and yellow swirling background of this piece.  I used real crow's feet in this and many other full portraits of crows, but have stopped using them as a result of the risks of catching West Nile Virus from crows.
Corvus Seattlensis #4

Dimensions: 18" x 13" x 1"
Date: 2002
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt, Piping, Stone

On this Corvus, I used some beading techniques that created interesting geometric patterns in the body of the crow, which appears to be ready to speak.
Corvus Seattlensis #7

Dimensions: 3.5" x 3.5" x .5"
Date: 2002
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt

I made a few small crows to fit in round frames with domed glass, which makes them look like family portraits.

Hands
Handbag/Reliquary #2

Dimension: 11.5" x 11" x 3"

Medium: Wooden hand bag, felted wool, beads, sequins

According to the dictionary, the word hand means "the terminal part of the vertebrate forelimb when modified (as in humans) as a grasping organ." Thus, this piece is both grasping and grasped.

Handbag/Reliquary #1

Dimension: 11" x 12" x 4"

Medium: Wooden hand bag, felted wool, beads, sequins

Fascinated by hand reliquaries from the Medieval era of the Catholic Church, this piece reflects my continued reverence for the hand, both actual and symbolic.

Arthritis

Dimensions: 14" x 14" x 1"
Date: 2008
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt, Embroidery Thread

I was recently diagnosed with arthritis in my right hand in the joint that, according to my doctor, is the most-used in the human body. I blame evolution.
Amber Hand

Dimensions: 14.5" x 14.5" x 1"
Date: 2003
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt

When I teach, I have my students make a hand, and I make one at the same time to keep them company.  This hand is one I made during a class, and it was purchased for Paul Allen.
Red & Black Hand #1

Dimensions: 13" x 15" x 1"
Date: 2005
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt

I enjoy beading hands. They symbolize power and I like thinking about my hands as I bead one because my own hands have done such good work for me.
Lavender Hand Bag #1

Dimensions: 10" x 11" x 3"
Date: 2004
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt, Mylar, Wooden Hand Bag

I found an old, decoupage wooden handbag in a thrift store and decided to make a true handbag out of it. I stripped off all the decoupage and old paint, repainted the purse, and placed the beaded hand on its front.

Fuck No Evil, Bear No Evil, Nurse No Evil #2

Dimensions: 29" x 19" x 1"
Date: 1999
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt, Embroidery Thread

The title of this art literally illustrates guidelines for women living in the modern era. We are free to do many things we never could before, but need to be more careful and more shrewd than ever before.
A Big Hand for the Little Lady

Dimensions: 20" x 20" x 2"

I made this as a whimsical response to show in an exhibit about the human body.

Petroglyphs
Columbia River Figures

Dimensions: 22" x 29" x 1"
Date: 1992
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt, Metal Charms

When I first began doing beadwork, I used designs that I came across in Columbia Basin petroglyphs and pictographs. The rock that this beautiful couple was carved into now sits in an interpretive at the Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park/Wanapum Recreational Area. It was originally near the river and was removed when the dams went in.

Ribbed Figures

Dimensions: 29" x 29" x 2"
Date: 1992
Medium: Beads, Sequins, Felt, Porcupine Quills

The rock that this amazing image came from is now inundated as a result of the Priest Rapids Dam on the Columbia River, and I had the good fortune to meet the woman who made rubbings of much of the rock art on Whale Island before it was submerged.
